Boombox Tour – Youtube mania!

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to go to Boombox Tour ’11, a concert with live performances from youtube artists and hosted by youtube personalities, Nigahiga and Kevjumba. Other headlines acts included Jayesslee, D-Pryde, Andrew Garcia and Maribelle Anes.

Kevjumba and Nigahiga doing their BEST crew thing

I was there really to see Nigahiga and Kevjumba as I subscribe to their channels. They’re pretty funny guys. I particularly like Kevjumba’s vids with his dad and Nigahiga’s music related videos.

Now yeah I know, I’m pretty old to like stuff like this. I certainly felt it when I rocked up to join the extremely long line of crazy asian teenagers at the Town Hall. We were right at the back of the line. Fortunately, my group was also ‘older people’ and the back of the line started filling up with other ‘older people’. Actually it really felt like the RICE rally if you’ve been there.

We were right at the back. Yes this is a really long line
So many phones!

The other act that my friends were going for was Jayesslee. Now I wasn’t particularly into their music/vids (or their looks like some) but after yesterday I think they’re really awesome 🙂 Esp. their cover of the Kutless song and giving God a mention was great. Then they sang their rendition of Wonder Girls’ ‘Nobody’ which was pretty cool too. Makes me think I should’ve done more with my twin. Oh well I think we have no more opportunity now its gone. Actually we had a dream of writing a book together…maybe…

Anyways just makes me think about how much influence these guys have – Nigahia is the No. 1 most subscribed youtuber in the world!…KevJumba is not too far behind.

No.1 most subscribed – Ryan Higa (nigahiga)

No.1 most subscribed female – Michelle Phan

No.1 most subscribed in Australia – Natalie Tran (communitychannel)

There’s a good number of Asians being viewed and having a good (or bad) influence on viewers. Its interesting since a lot of these youtubers including WongFu attract a lot of asian subscribers in america and australia (and other parts). Even though they didn’t really start off thinking about that kind of audience (…says WongFu). Perhaps its another indicator that Asian American/Australians are really keen to support and look up to other Asians out there when there usually aren’t that many on our TV and movie screens.

A couple of thoughts:

– Wouldn’t it be cool if someone at the top was a Christian? Although to be at the top you can’t really talk about too much seriousness, most of them tend to be comedians.

– How could the power of Youtube be used for the gospel and for ABC ministry? Currently we have people posting sermons but that really isn’t interesting watching a sermon since its not very visual. A remember a group called ‘The Skit Guys’ who did great vids which was pretty cool (remember God’s Chisel?). Jayesslee also post up a lot of Christian covers which attract a lot of viewers so I guess there’s some things out there.

Does anyone know any other Christian groups out there using Youtube well? particularly Asian?

I'm passionate about helping ABC's integrate faith with our ethnic identity as well as developing ethnic / culturally aware churches.

  1. Hey Grace,
how have you been? haha never knew you had a blog, or that I would comment on it :P, btw this is Ray from Brisbane and I wanted to go to the boombox tour, but for some reason Brisbane is the only city tat doesn’t have the BB tour :(,

and yeah I agree with the Asian Christian Youtube thing, but did you know Michelle Phan is actually a Christian, I don’t watch her videos in particular because they are all about make up haha, so it has no relevance to me but the video I did come across ages ago was about her Christianity sorta here’s the link:

    RAy 🙂

    1. Hi Ray,
Yeah I just started it so still trying some things out.

Shame it didn’t go to Brisbane! You guys seem to miss out a lot.

Oh yeah, she is Christian! – thanks for reminding me…although I guess her content is make-up. She does try to comment on God/Jesus on her facebook and vids now and again but feel bad for her since she has so many subscribers who start hating her or telling her how she shouldn’t say those things. Its tough as a Christian in the spotlight…
